Milan (Italian: Milano) is the main city of northern Italy, located in the plains of Lombardy. The city proper (Comune) has about 1,308,500 inhabitants (2004). The population of the urban area (Greater Milan), comprising the core of Lombardy, is estimated, as of 2006, to be about 4,280,820 people. Finally, the official population of the Metro Area counts around 7,400,000 residents (2006).
